“DAMN IT FEELS GOOD TO SEE PEOPLE UP ON IT!” Full props to Mo’Nique for shouting out the mainstream hit “Just a Friend” and letting Biz tell the back story behind it (never new Elton John and The Beastie Boys inspired that track). But I’m loving how Mo’Nique was reppin’ the true school Juice Crew hit “The Vapors” first! (Footage courtesy Urban Daily)

All I know is “The Vapors” is still on of my favorite songs of all time. The message is still applicable today. I straight fell out when Mo’Nique started talking about Biz killing her in the studio when they were recording “Snaps”. And yes, Biz Markie is a damn good party DJ.

Favorite Noise: “The DJ’s name is Premier, and I’m the Guru”

Keith “Guru” Elam aka “Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal”, 1/2 of the Hip-Hop duo Gang Starr suffered a major heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. According to the twitter account of of the other half of Gang Starr, DJ Premier, Guru underwent surgery while in a medically induced coma and is now in recovery. No updates after that.

Guru’s strong suit to hear him tell it, it is his voice, but he is also an artist whose raps were purposeful monologues.

I listened to brand new hip-hop classics by Gang Starr from elementary school until after college. Every album they dropped had hip-hop classics on it. Their albums are classics. Daily Operation is my favorite, with Step In The Arena and Moment of Truth tied for a close second.

Not to mention the Jazzmatazz series Guru released with the help of collaborators from the genres of Jazz, Hip-hop and R&B. Although the 1st in the Jazzmatazz series was the best, they all had some gems. I still bump “No Time to Play Featuring DC Lee and Ronny Jordan” every summer. It’s definitely barbecue approved (family friendly, but not corny, upbeat..you know).

I think the thing I appreciate the most about Gang Starr’s music is Guru’s damn near conversational delivery and DJ Premier’s ability to create beats that allows an MC rap to their strengths.

They “broke up” or stopped making music around 2004 or 2005. Here’s to a full recovery.

I am still too pissed at the party that is supposed to control the congress and the executive branch to write about some damn politics…So instead, behold DJ Steve Porter’s remix of “General” Larry Platt’s “Pants on the Ground”

Note: Did you know “General” Larry Platt was an organizer with the SCLC during the civil rights movement? Even Brett Favre was on it. And take it A Cappella too haters.

Pendergrass was just one of the artists you had to know from parent’s LP collections. Its funny how songs you learned as a kid while running around at barbecues, being toted around in carpools to church, at the barber shop or playing in the background while the family did chores become so much a part of you.

Note: I went out last night, here in Philadelphia, and I didn’t hear any Pendergrass or Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes songs (let alone sets) by any of the DJs. Pretty shameful. I won’t repeat that mistake. Teddy P posts all weekend.
